Congregation Emanuel Meeting
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
1) Call to order – the meeting was called to order at 7:44 PM. Present were Elliott Vizel, President, Diane Emery, Vice President, Steve Martin, Ritual and Adult Education, Jane Martin, Jeff and Leslie Masingo, Jack Celnik, Helen Rifas, Gift Shop

4) Old business
4.1) Rabbi Freidson - January 15-17th, 29th– 31st (Tu B’Shvat): transportation, Friday supper,
accommodations, publicity. – Plans for January 15 – 17th are dinner at Mayo’s with Elliott and Diane (Diane will email people about providing dinner at the Temple as an alternative), Friday night service at 7:30, 10 AM Saturday Torah service, 6 PM covered dish, Havdallah and adult education, Sunday 10 AM brunch and schmooze. Arnold Podair has advertised in the Charlotte Observer. Diane will pick up the bagels.
4.2) Covered Dish and a Movie – Saturday January 23rd @6pm - Down Home – Jewish Life in North
Carolina – publicity to Statesville community? – Diane will invite neighboring Temples in
Hickory and at the Lake.
4.3) Tu B’shvat – sundown Friday January 29th – sundown Saturday January 30th. (“ Super Tu B’ ”),
publicity, kids programming. The seder is planned for Saturday night. Helen will buy the fruit.
4.4) Website update – going live, items to finish, updates – new website is online as of January 6.
4.5) Purim - Rabbi Shields? - Sunday Feb. 28th. – Rabbi Shields is available for Saturday evening, or
Diane and Leslie will plan the program.
4.6 Presbyterian Church – Xmas Eve babysitting – Stacey Schlesinger, Janet Rosenfeld (and children), and the Abramskys babysat.
4.7) 5th street Ministry volunteers – Diane, Libby, Manfred, Helen, Fawn and Kevin Combs served
108 shelter guests on December 28, 2009. The next date for volunteering is January 21.
4.8) Siddur dedication labels – the labels are made and Hannah Adler has them.
4.9) Seder 2010 - First Seder Monday March 29th. – Jack contacted Jeff Gleiberman about catering at
the Temple. We would need to hire someone to serve. Steve Martin will look into it and Jack
will get an estimate on the cost of food from Gleiberman’s.
4.10) Rabbi Philmus’ Rain barrel – Jack will take care of the gutter work
4.11) Hannukah party evaluation -- 45 people came to the party which was a big success. Diane will
collect photos from Fawn and the Adlers for the website.
4.12) Strategic Planning – reclaiming the top floor? Library? Membership? Raising our profile in the
community – JCLN, CJN, publicity, etc.
4.13) Kostas painting is still at the Temple.

visit.

6.1) Phillips Bat Mitzah – Brooke (daughter of Sally) has moved her Bat Mitzvah to May 15
6.2) Social Hall - Jack made a motion to purchase 4 more round tables and 5 more sconces to
complete the décor in the social hall and provide seating for 88 – 92 people. The motion passed
(Larry Rosenfeld voted by proxy)
7) Date of next meeting – Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 7:30 pm.
